Charlie Chaplin on his 129th birth anniversary

Charlie Chaplin has been the definition and benchmark of comedy in our lives for a long time now. His great works has made the world laugh, cry and feel for more than a century and still continues to leave its charm.
He is more than a comic genius. Born on April 16, 1889, Sir Charles Spencer "Charlie" Chaplin is one of the most prominent and iconic actors ever, having risen to fame in the "silent era" of cinema history.
While his comic timing and acting is known and appreciated by everyone, he has shared millions of priceless advice over the span of his life.  Without uttering a word, the charismatic actor-comedian has induced fits of laughter among many generations and many more to come. He became a worldwide icon through his on screen person ‘The Tramp’, with a career spanning more than 7 decades.
He took theatrical traditions and made them new again for cinema with his distinctive filmic eye and comic genius. He thought in celluloid; he blended high and low art, comedy and tragedy, farce and sincerity.
With a career that spanned more than 75 years, he was one of the few silent actors to make a successful transition to talkies, he always knew when and how to reinvent himself, and the media he worked in too.
Out of the three Oscars that Chaplin received, two were honorary awards. He was given an honorary award for writing, directing, acting and producing "The Circus" in 1929. He received his second honorary award in 1972. In 1973 he received an Oscar for Best Score for the movie "Limelight" which was made in 1952 but was released in U.S. only in 1972.
Chaplin died on December 25, 1977 in Switzerland. Soon after his funeral, his corpse was stolen. After his body was recovered from thieves, he was cremated.
As we remember him on his 129th birth anniversary, here are the 12 quotes by Charlie Chaplin that will make your day:
1. Life is a tragedy when seen in close-up, but a comedy in long-shot.
2. The hate of men will pass, and dictators die, and the power they took from the people will return to the people. And so long as men die, liberty will never perish.
3. To truly laugh, you must be able to take your pain, and play with it!
4. Nothing is permanent in this wicked world – not even our troubles.
5. My pain may be the reason for somebody’s laugh. But my laugh must never be the reason for somebody’s pain.
6. Life is a play that does not allow testing. So, sing, cry, dance, laugh and live intensely, before the curtain closes and the piece ends with no applause.
7. You’ll never find a rainbow if you’re looking down.
8. Think about yourself at least once in your life otherwise you may miss the best comedy in this world.
9. This is a ruthless world and one must be ruthless to cope with it.
10. We think too much and feel too little.
11. A man’s true character comes out when he’s drunk.
12. I went into the business for the money, and the art grew out of it. If people are disillusioned by that remark, I can’t help it. It’s the truth.
